Many people like to run for physical and mental health. Trail running is an especially excellent way to get out into nature and really get to know the area. Milan and the surrounding region offers many places for the more rugged runners to get their shoes dirty!

Situated as we are, so close to lake Erie, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to run near water. One such spot is the Huron River Greenway MetroPark Trail. The trail consists of two almost-mile-long segments. The Milan piece runs from the end of North Main Street and heads north 0.9 mile to end at a barricade across the trail. The Huron piece runs from DuPont Marsh State Nature Preserve off River Road and heads south about 0.9 mile, ending at a gate on River View Drive in Franklin Flats – don’t pass the barricade or gate, they lead to private property. You’ll have an opportunity to view the marsh and a nice view of the Huron River. To access the trails, In Huron, park off County Highway 126/River Road at the DuPont Marsh State Nature Preserve.

Another nice spot, is the Milan Towpath MetroPark at 99 N. Main St. in Milan. This is also just short of one mile and follows the path of an early canal and railway, running through the site of a Moravian Indian mission village. Leashed dogs are welcome, and you’ll have the chance to see some interesting birds, too!

Our last lovely running place is Sheldon Marsh State Nature Preserve – a short 13-minute drive from Milan to Huron. With two miles of trails, this almost 500 acre reserve is home to carpets of wildflowers, hundreds of bird species, and squirrels, groundhogs, and chipmunks. The trails (and parking) fill up quickly on nice days, but any time of year is a great time to run, walk or hike! The parking lot for Sheldon Marsh is well marked on the
north side of Highway 6 (
Grand Army of the Republic Highway), just west of the Sawmill Creek resort.

Even running along the roads in the historic district here in Milan is a treat, followed by a lovely evening at Angel Welcome Bed & Breakfast, resting in your beautiful guest room, dreaming the night away in a cozy and comfy bed. Wake up to a delicious homemade breakfast to get your next day of exercise started right!

We have made our home in Milan (pronounced MY-LEN) for many years. It’s a lovely little village with only about 1400 residents, and has a real small-town feel. Let us tell you a bit more about our area.

The spot where Milan now stands had had many identities over the last few centuries.  The general area was originally a Moravian Indian Mission Village called Petquotting, which had been founded in 1787. That site was abandoned in 1808, and in 1817, Ebenezer Merry dammed the Huron River and established his grist- and sawmills and called it Merry Mills. In 1833, the village nearby, which had been called Beatty, was incorporated as Milan, named after the city in Italy. That same year, the Milan Canal (a.k.a. The Big Ditch) was opened, allowing agricultural goods to be transported from the surrounding areas directly to New York. This, in turn, created new brokerages for the exchange of the farmers’ produce with other goods from the East. In addition to the canal activity, ship-building started, with 60 ships being built of the plenteous white oak. This was they hey-day of the shipping business in Milan. You can still see the canal-route along the Huron River Greenway – a beautiful, beginner-level hiking trail of less than 2 miles – a great way to spend an hour or so on a nice day!

In 1847, Milan’s most famous resident, Thomas Edison, was born at what is now 9 Edison Drive. The family lived in the house until they moved to Port Huron in 1853. He purchased the house in 1906, and after his passing, his wife and daughter endeavored to turn the house into a museum of his life. That building now houses the Thomas Edison Birthplace Museum, which is now undergoing a huge reconstruction to accommodate the new Don Gfell Education Center. The museum will re-open in April 2024. We will be excited to share this exciting new version of the old home place with our guests!

Despite missing the post-Civil War boom, Milan is host to a bevy of beautiful Greek Revival architecture, along with Victorian-style homes. To see some of these lovely edifices, vist the Kelley Block on the village square, along with the impressive great houses on all of the village’s streets are remarkably preserved. In 2002, Milan was selected by The National Trust for Historic Preservation as a Distinctive Destination. Take a walking tour of Milan’s gorgeous homes using this map from the Erie County Historical Society.

As everyone knows, melon farming has been a huge success in Milan due to the perfect soil conditions for sweet and ripe melons. Every year at Labor Day weekend, the Milan Melon Festival takes over the Square and surrounding areas for exciting, family-friendly frivolity celebrating our delicious Cantaloupes and Watermelons. Thousands of visitors come to the village for good old-fashioned fun. If you want to visit our fair city for the fest, make sure to book your stay early!

This is just a small part of the history and great things to do in Milan, Ohio – come and visit us to learn more and have a great escape!

March is a variable month near Lake Erie – it can be very cold and snowy, or get up into the high 40’s – low 50s. The earlier in the month you come, the more chance of cold temps. For this reason, our March road trip leads to only indoor activities!

Our March trip is going to feature a special dinner, followed by a fun comedy play. Port Clinton is a nice, easy 30-minute drive from Milan. A feature of the drive is the trip over Sandusky Bay on the Edison Bridge, especially if you’re from more interior climes with no coastline! Part of the region known as “VacationLand”, Port Clinton is also known as the Walleye Capital of the World and a fabulous place to visit any time of the year.

First thing, purchase your show tickets online. Tickets are $15 each ($12 for seniors).  Next, call for no later than 6pm reservations at the restaurant at 419-734-CIAO (2426) – you’ll want to be done with dinner and on the way to the theater by 7:00 pm.

You’ll start off from Angel Welcome Bed & Breakfast, heading down to Port Clinton using Google Maps directions. Depending on what time you’ve made dinner reservations, you’ll leave no later than 5:20 pm. Ciao Bella is a wonderful Italian ristorante with a full menu that includes your favorites, along with seafood specialties like Lobster Al Forno. Entrees range from $15 for spaghetti with meatballs to $44 for Filet Mignon. After you’ve enjoyed a delicious dinner, head off to the theater. The show starts at 7:30. The theater is 13 minutes from the restaurant.

Four Old Broads, presented by Playmakers Civic Theatre, is the comedic mystery we’ve chosen for you! The premise is:

“Former burlesque star Beatrice Shelton is itching for a change and she’s had enough of the repeated visits to Helen, Georgia’s “adorable German village.” She believes a Sassy Seniors Caribbean Cruise could be the perfect escape if only she can persuade her devout best friend, Eaddy Mae Clayton, to take a break from her prayers and accompany her. However, the atmosphere at Magnolia Place Assisted Living has been less than ideal since Nurse Pat Jones started her tenure. The latest resident, Imogene Fletcher, is facing unexpected memory lapses. Maude Jenkins is engrossed in her beloved soap drama and is busy organizing her own farewell ceremony.

As they navigate this chaos, a mystery peppered with laughs unfolds. This group is determined to outwit the dubious Nurse Pat Jones and decipher why so many peers are being shifted to “the dark side” the nature of a peculiar pill, and the whereabouts of Doctor Head. The plot thickens with comedic twists.”

Sounds like a lot of fun! The theater has been providing entertainment to the Port Clinton community for over 75 years, and is going strong in 2024.

After the show, come on back to Angel Welcome, to your warm and comfortable room and cozy bed, then wake up to a delicious homemade breakfast!

This itinerary will work for Friday-Saturday, March 8-9 or March 15-16. If you prefer a matinee, the show will also be staged on Sunday, March 10 and March 17 at 2pm. Just adjust the timing to fit your needs.

The unofficial state fish of Ohio is the Walleye – we have the best in the nation, and the best spots to catch them, as well. In fact, 22.5% of Ohioans surveyed voted for the Walleye to become the OFFICIAL state fish this past year – and maybe someday it will happen! The Walleye was even featured on this year’s 2023 Fish Ohio lapel pin, awarded to anglers with “noteworthy catches of Ohio’s fish”. Due to all of this, it’s not surprising that on New Year’s Eve, the big shiny thing that drops is not a ball, but a giant Walleye fish!

For the past 26 years, since 1997, Port Clinton, Ohio, the Walleye Capital of the World, is the place to be for the annual Walleye Drop. At the stroke of midnight, Wylie Jr., a huge, 20-foot-long, 600-pound. LED-lit  Walleye, will drop from above to welcome in 2024 – what a spectacle! In addition, a spectacular fireworks show will light up the cold night sky following the main event!

Prior to the drop, Port Clinton will be busy with a kids’ party from 4-6pm, a “Bar Swim” that consists of buses taking partiers around multiple venues in Port Clinton, Catawba and Marblehead until 11:30, so everyone has time to gather before midnight with thousands of other eager spectators in downtown Port Clinton for the BIG DROP! Merch, including commemorative shirts, and 50/50  tickets will be available for purchase the day of the party.

Port Clinton is an easy 30 minute drive from Angel Welcome Bed & Breakfast – a nice place for you to drop after you enjoy the festivities. Wake up in a warm bed and then enjoy a homemade breakfast to start your new year!

Angel Welcome Bed & Breakfast is in an amazing positioning for the upcoming full solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. We are in one of the best spots for viewing the eclipse in the United States, as we are in the path of totality. This is the last full solar eclipse until 2044!

Only locations where the Moon’s shadow completely covers the Sun – known as the path of totality – will experience a total solar eclipse, and we are in that area! We expect the partial eclipse to begin just before 2pm EDT  – make sure you are prepared with your solar viewing glasses (never look directly into the sun, even during a full eclipse). The totality will begin at 3:13 pm. EDT, hit maximum totality at 3:15pm, then finish totality at 3:17 pm. You want to be watching and ready so you don’t miss it! The partial eclipse will then continue until it ends at 4:29pm.

Since April 8th is on a Monday, it’s the perfect opportunity to take a special Sunday-Tuesday (or longer) Eclipse Getaway – start your stay on Sunday night to get a great sleep in our comfortable beds, eat a filling and delicious homemade breakfast, and then relax until it’s time to head to our lovely garden to view the solar show! After this incredible event, enjoy a lovely walk in the beautiful town of Milan, then dinner at one of the restaurants on the town square.

After another restful night’s slumber and yummy breakfast, head out to any one of the many things to do in North-Central Ohio, then repeat! After you take your reluctant leave, you’ll fondly remember your Eclipse getaway forever. We all need something special to look forward to, and should take those opportunities when we can.

Update: Although we are now fully booked for the eclipse, it’s not too late to get on our waiting list – if someone else cancels, we will contact people on the list in the order they signed up – you may still have a chance!

The Milan Melon Festival is described as being a “big, small town festival”. The lovely village of Milan, Ohio, is the home of the melon extravaganza, which brings thousands of people to our area for Labor Day weekend. This year, the fest runs from Friday, September 1 through Monday, September 4, 2023.

Friday is a great night to come down to enjoy dinner from select food vendors before the full festival begins on Saturday.

The stars of the event are the renowned Watermelon Sherbet and Cantaloupe Ice cream. These frosty treats are ONLY available during the festival – get your cup, cone or cantaloupe full, or take home a container to help you remember the sweet time you had in Milan!

The Melon Festival is known to be very family friendly – youngsters and the very experienced in age will enjoy the events, including a kiddie tractor pull, pie-eating contest, pageants for babies up to a young ladies’ scholarship contest, band concerts, dance exhibitions, and so much more.

Live musical acts will accompany your travels through the fest, the car show, Firefighter’s Chicken BBQ, arts and crafts vendors, all the rides, and the wonderful food vendors with delicious items like pierogi, pastries, pizza, burgers and fries, cabbage and noodles (a Midwestern delicacy!) and the list goes  on!

Some like to run, so they’ll take part in the 5K or Fun Run, which is usually held on the Monday of the festival. This year, that will be September 4.

If you love a good, old-fashioned parade, you will want to be here on Sunday for the Grand Parade, taking place at 2pm, though you’ll want to get there earlier to secure a good watching spot. You’ll see floats, decorated trucks, bands, the pageant queen and her court, and more. This event is subject to weather – they want to keep everyone safe!

This will also be the third annual “One in a Melon” contest, wherein Milan residents decorate their homes in a melon theme – you may see some as you go through town!

We still have limited availability for the weekend here at Angel Welcome Bed & Breakfastbook now!

It’s heating up out there and the summertime escapades are ready to happen! June and July of 2023 will be the best time for summer festivities since 2019, and we know you are ready to roll! We’ve got a list of fun things to do near the B&B – don’t forget to make your reservations early so you can have a soft spot to land after days of sun and fun!

Vermilion is traveling back in time for this year’s Festival of the Fish with the theme, Fishstock…3 days of Peace, Music & Perch! Sounds great to us! The weekend of June 16-18, there are so many events happening at this festival, your head will spin! These include a Crazy Craft Regatta, Pageants for girls and boys, the Lighted Boat Parade, a Fire Fighters Water Fight, Crafts & Collectibles Marketplace, Food Trucks, Vendors, live musical entertainment, sandcastle content, a fireworks bonanza, and the Fishstock Father’s Day parade. The merriment starts each day at 11am. No matter if you go one night or all 3, you will have a blast from the past!

For a more mellow time, visit Perry’s Monument for their Summer Solstice Sunset Tour. Celebrate the longest day of the year, on June 21, with a sunset tour to the top of the Monument to watch the sun set over Lake Erie on the “monumental” observation deck. Purchase a ticket ($10) at the Visitor’s Center to take the elevator to the observation deck during golden hour. The tour starts at 8pm.

Huron River Fest is happening July 7-9th – this wonderful street fair will have Midway rides and games, the Lions Club River Fest Parade, 5K race and fun run, Pets on the Pier, the Queen’s competition, the River Fest Road Show, fireworks, vendors, music, and lots of that wonderful fair food – what deep-fried delicacies do you like best?

For the American history buffs, the weekend of June 15 & 16 is a can’t-miss occasion! Civil War Days takes place in Bellevue at Historic Lyme Village. In addition to battle reenactments, you can meet the reenactors and demonstrators, and learn more about what life was like during the War Between the States. A period tea and dancing will also take place each day on the lawn behind the Wright Mansion, with all buildings open for tours.

When you stay at Angel Welcome Bed & Breakfast, we’ll have your hearty homemade breakfast ready to get you prepared for a good day of summer fun, and your comfy bed ready for a great night’s sleep!
