Put-In-Bay’s 2013 Labor Day Bicentennial Celebration

Put-In-Bay is a very well-known island destination right here in the Mainland United States! Thousands of visitors come from all over to tour this lovely island village. 2013 is a really special year, in that it is the Bicentennial of the Battle of Lake Erie (also known as the Battle of Put-in-Bay).

The Battle of Lake Erie was one of the major battles of the War of 1812, in which Admiral Perry in command of the American Lake fleet defeated the British under Commander Heriot Barclay. From this signal battle, the famous quote was issued: “We have met the enemy and they are ours.”, in a letter from Perry to Major General William Henry Harrison.

The celebration begins on Labor Day weekend. The first part of the celebration is a Tall Ships Festival, featuring the US Brig Niagara, which will be open for dockside tours. Many other activities, such as a Regency Ball, a lecture series,  Art in the Park, concerts, Historic events, Historic Baseball Game, parades, wreath laying ceremonies at the battle site, will lead to the Tall Ships Parade of Sail on August 29th and the All-Day recreation of the Battle of Lake Erie on September 2.

Put-In-Bay is a nice one hour drive from Angel Welcome Bed & Breakfast. You can drive to  the ferry and ride over to the Bay. The ferries have different schedules from early morning to late at night.
